Strange BP! Empty
PostSubject: Strange BP!   Strange BP! EmptyTue 22 Jun 2010, 7:07 pm

I had my booking in appointment with my midwife and my BP was 120/60. I am pleased with it, but it is just totally different from my usual BP which is normally 105/70! Obviously the diastolic is way down- the midwife even asked me if I felt dizzy! But the number was a lot higher than usual.

Normally the top and bottom number of my BP is fairly close together, but these are way apart. Anyone any experience of this? Just want to check I'm 'normal'. Embarassed

Sorry for being such a worrier.

Emma

Hi Emmie,

Please dont worry (I know easier said than done!)

Your BP is perfect.

The top number is the pressure at which your heart has to squeeze at to get the blood around your body. The bottom number is the point at which it relaxes.

We aim for all adults to have a blood pressure of 120/80 OR LOWER!

This means that at 120, your heart was squeezing at text book normal but is relaxing perfectly. This is evidence that as your normal BP is 105 you were probably a little anxious....but your heart coped so well is was quite relaxed.

A BP that is 90/50 or lower would be low BP and possibly at levels lower than this might you feel dizzy. This happens when your top number is low as your heart just doesnt have the squeezability to oomph the blood fast enough.

I hope this helps.

Warm wishes
Liz

If it any reassurance - (after Liz's wonderful explanation). My last BP at 24 weeks with the consultant was 128/68. That is even further apart and the consultant was happy because my lower number was nice and low and she blamed the top on anxiety! That is the lowest my bottom number has been for the past 3 years (since before the PE kicked in!) so I felt great!
Hope that reassures you- I think your BP is great !!

Glad your blood pressure is so good! I know the worries, we all understand. The amount of panics I've got in over blood pressure is unbelievable!! X

Thankyou, nicki, that does help and thanks for your reply Lizzie. Knew I'd do this- panic over every little thing, but it's just so hard not to! Aargh!
